As summer kicks off and more people head to the beach, Atlantic Shark Expeditions (ASE) is reminding everyone to be “shark smart” when entering the ocean. With white shark sightings on the rise along the Atlantic coasts of Canada and the U.S., understanding the facts and taking a few simple precautions can go a long way toward staying safe—and respectful—in the water.

“White sharks are not mindless killers,” says Dr. Neil Hammerschlag, founder of ASE and Executive Director of the Shark Research Foundation. “They are strategic, beautiful, and misunderstood predators that have always been part of our waters. As sightings increase, it’s essential we respond with awareness, not fear.”

Although the risk of a shark bite remains extremely low, these common-sense tips can help keep your next ocean adventure safe and smart.

Dr. Hammerschlag’s Tips on Being Shark Smart

  • Avoid swimming or surfing where a shark has recently been spotted.
  • Stay clear of areas where white sharks may be hunting—like where seals are present or where fish activity is high (e.g., jumping baitfish or diving seabirds).
  • Steer away from areas where people are actively fishing. A hooked fish is often bleeding and struggling, which can attract sharks.
  • Don’t swim or surf alone. There’s safety in numbers.
  • Avoid swimming during low-light hours—dawn, dusk, or nighttime—when visibility is reduced.
  • Remove reflective jewelry. Shiny objects can mimic fish scales and spark curiosity.
  • Trust your instincts. If something feels off, get out of the water. Some survivors have reported a strange feeling beforehand—your body may sense subtle danger before you do.
